About The Department :

The Department of Instrumentation Technology was established in the year 2006-07 with an annual intake of 60 students and renamed as Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering in the year 2014. The Department has been accredited by NBA, New Delhi for a period of 3 years (2017-18 to 2019-2020) and affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi and approved by AICTE, New Delhi. The Department has three hi-tech classrooms with projectors and well equipped laboratories with the latest software and hardware facilities required for the fulfillment of the curriculum and also to take up innovative projects.

The department caters to the ever challenging needs of technical excellence in all areas of Electronics Instrumentation with a perfect blend of industrial exposure, coupled with good technical base. The department has qualified and experienced faculty and technically competent supporting staff on its role. The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide adequate opportunities for students to learn and innovate. The department is actively engaged in industry-institute interaction. The department is vibrant in conducting Seminars, Workshops, and Industrial visits for the continuous growth of students.

 About Course :

The Department is offering B.E. degree course in “Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering”, which is a multi-disciplinary branch of engineering, dealing with the science and technology of measurement of a large number of variables embracing the engineering disciplines like electrical, electronics, mechanical, communication and computer engineering. In today’s world of technological advancements Instrumentation Technology plays a vital role like aircraft instrumentation, biomedical instrumentation, distributed control systems, process controls and robotics. Knowing the ever growing importance & fast changing technical requirement of measurement and analysis, computers, electronic instrumentation, electronics circuits, power electronics, analog and digital systems, microprocessors, microcontrollers, digital signal processors (DSP) and programming languages are very essential. Analytical, mathematical, conceptual and practical skills are essential for an Instrumentation Engineer. All industries require controls and measurements of equipments and parameters leading to automation of industrial processes. Accurate and reliable measurements lead to better quality of products. Hence, quality of measurement and instrumentation is an important aspect studied during the course.

Innovative Robotics Awareness Lab :

Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 30 Lakhs under CISEE program for the proposal titled “Establishment of Innovative Robotics Awareness Lab” with Dr.M.Shivakumar, Professor & Principal, GSSSIETW, Mysuru as programme coordinator.
The Innovative Robotics Awareness Lab being setup at GSSSIETW aims to have lab setup for various fundamental experiments on robotics, provides self building of simple robots performing various operations as per the commands given through software data, voice commands, sensory commands etc. B.E Students of GSSSIETW have carried out the project works namely Robotic 2D Plotter , Reactive Navigation of Multiple Moving Agents in a room Environment and Stuttered Speech Recognition for Robotic Control, Optimal Path Planning With Obstacle Avoidance For An Autonomous Robot, Overtaking Assistance Using Image Processing, Obstacle avoidance, battery charge monitoring and docking of autonomous Robot, Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device for people with communication disorder, Conversion of Speech to Text for Hearing Impaired people, Hand gesture controlled Robot, Docking and self-recharging of autonomous mobile Robot and Real Time Driver Drowsiness Detection and Alert System.

The major procurements in the robotics labs are:

Basic Embedded Systems and Robotic Lab setup :

  • It mainly consists of FireBird V 2560, Spark V Robot, accessories, communication modules and the Sensors like Infrared range sensor, Ultrasonic range sensor, 3 axis digital accelerometer, three axis magnetometer and Gyroscope.

Advanced Embedded Systems and Robotic Lab setup :

The Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, GSSSIETW, Mysuru had organized hands on training for robotics competition “ROBOTEER-2018” on 28th April 2018 under Instrument Society of India (ISOI) Student Chapter for 4th semester E&IE students. The resource person for this program was Mr. M V Sreenivas Rao, Associate Professor, Mr. Nagesh M.S, and Basavanna M Assistant Professors, Dept. of E&IE, GSSSIETW, Mysuru. The training was conducted for one day on the basics of Arduino board and its application on line following robot.

In the morning session, an overview of the Embedded Systems and basics of Arduino board and its applications was presented to the students. The students in the next session built the working model of line following robot using sp duino board, sensors, motors and other accessories and demonstrated its working.

The Department of Instrumentation Technology of GSSSIETW, Mysuru had organized online lab inauguration of the Robotics Lab which was setup through e-yantra using a grant of Rs.30 Lakhs sanctioned by Vision Group of Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka with Dr. M.Shivakumar as Program Coordinator. e-yantra is a project initiated by IIT-Bombay sponsored by Ministry of Human Resource Department under National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology. The ceremony started with an introductory address by Professors from IIT Bombay.


The main objective of the Inauguration is to unite all colleges joining the e-yantra Lab Setup Initiative by inaugurating their individual labs simultaneously through the live web conference. The e-yantra team from IIT, Bombay congratulated GSSSIETW and assured their full assistance in future for any support from their end. The signage board sent by e-Yantra was opened by the dignitaries to symbolically declare lab as an e-Yantra lab. The college had received a free robotic kit which was handed over to the lab team leader Dr. M.Shivakumar by the Principal.

Department had organized a “Roboteer-2020” for Diploma students on 28th January 2020. The workshop was conducted for one day on the basics of Arduino programming and its application on obstacle avoidance robot. The main aim of this workshop is to give awareness on Engineering and also to give knowledge glimpses on Robotics. The Event is inter-disciplinary in nature and designed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge for students in Robotics. The objective of this Event is to build a robot which can find its way in a maze with walls from start point to finish point with many dead ends. The robot has to reach its destination in minimum time. It is an opportunity for applying the knowledge to solve the given task using the robotic kit provided during the event. GTTC is a premier tool room and training center established by Government of India in 1972.Center of Excellence (CoE) is established by Government of Karnataka through commerce and industries department with Siemens Industry Software India Pvt, Ltd. The objective is to provide training to Engineering students as well as faculty on world class technologies from Siemens. These trainings will greatly benefit the student community in educating them on the latest technologies which is used in the industry through Workshops, Final Year Projects, Industrial Visits, Internship Programs and Skill Development Programs. Students will acquire latest relevant knowledge and best practices of industries. The employability of students shall increase by certification from globally renowned Siemens.

To motivate and support the students and to enhance their skills and knowledge for the technological upgradation, innovation and competitiveness in the field of Robotics, GSSS Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women (GSSSIETW), KRS Road, Metagalli,Mysuru has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RobotGuru, Mysuru on 24th April 2018. The signing of MoU was organized by the Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering.

The MoU was signed by Dr.M.Shivakumar, Principal, GSSSIETW, and Mr.Sivakumar Subramanian, Partner, RobotGuru, in the presence of Sri.R.K.Bharath, CEO and Management Committee Member, GSSSIETW, Mr.Harsha, Director, RobotGuru, Mysuru, Dr. Venkatratnam Chitturi, Associate Professor & Head, Department of E&IE, GSSSIETW,Mysuru.


Robot Guru which seeks to teach robotics in an integrated manner interweaving hardware and software. It focuses on fundamental principles and underlying core technologies like 3D sensing, speech processing, RGBD sensors, Gesture processes and Person tracking. This pioneer in education is a brainchild of innovative experts in the field of robotics who have over 28 patents in US, Europe and Japan. The team has extensive experience in building and programming award-winning consumer and industrial robots apart from mentoring various start-ups in Silicon Valley. RobotGuru, is engaged in Business, Manufacturing, Skill Development, Education and R&D Services in the fields of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Drones and relatedfields. It trains the student on the emerging technologies in order to bridge the skill gap and make them industry ready, through workshops and final year projects.

LabVIEW licenced software was purchased and a training program was organized for both students and faculty on LabVIEW Core 1 and 2, DAQ training using myDAQ, Robotics using myRIO & ad dons, NI-USRP and CLAD Certification (training and exam). Instrument Society of India

The Society of Instrumentation professionals was established in the year 1970, with head quarters at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Today it has six chapters at Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Dehradun, Pune and Cochin. It strives to act as a link between academic institutions and the instrumentation industry, by organizing several programs. It also conducts programs for students and working professionals in the form of short term courses, symposia and topical reviews.

The objectives of Instrument Society of India are:

  1. To provide a forum for pooling the knowledge and experience of individuals in promoting development of instruments and instrumentation systems.
  2. To act as an exchange bureau for dissemination of technical information by way of periodic and special publications, appraising the technical and scientific personnel in the industries as well as in research institutions, of the requirements in the field of instrumentation by the industries and the educational and scientific institutions mutually.
  3. To organize liaison between interested entrepreneurs with technical problems in their instrumentation activities and the experts who offer to act as consultants.

The benefits of becoming member of Institutional Life Membership are:

  1. Free journal copy throughout lifetime.
  2. One registration fee free for attending Int. /national conference/ symposium organized by ISOI for one of the faculty member of the institution.
